Shhhh! Please do not disturb the sleeping baby raccoons!

Today, while we were going about our day, the City of Omaha finally began the process of removing the big and old - and unfortunately dead - trees on the right-of-way in front of our house.  My own process of coming to terms with the removal of these trees is another post for another day, but, to make a long story short (and because it actually wouldn't be that interesting of a post), I'll just say that I have found peace with removing the trees because I have come to recognize the hazard they pose to us and to our wonderful neighbors.  This was underscored today when, after nearly two years of sitting on the "to be removed at some point when the city budget allows" list, the city arborist sent a crew out immediately upon re-inspecting our trees at our request following recent rain and heavy winds.

When we came home today after the tree crew had come and gone, we discovered a hollowed log in our front yard with a family of sleeping baby raccoons.  After calling the arborist and piecing together the story from our house painters (so much old house maintenance going on around here...), we learned that the raccoons were found in a high branch and we were advised to let them snooze in the front yard until nighttime when, being nocturnal, the mama raccoon will hopefully come down from our neighbor's tree and get the babies.

You can't imagine how cute they were (the picture doesn't do them justice) and we spent most of the evening on our front porch, playing and guarding the raccoons.  All the while, the raccoons, pardon the pun, sawed logs!
